Great World History Review!

I bought this book because all of the other books that I found were about 400 pages. They weren't concise and to the point which, is what I needed. This book is only a mere 130 pages in length. The pages are all neatly color coded and range from Ancient History (4000BC-AD 500) to The Modern World (1700-Present). I used this book as an adult to review the major points in World History. It's really a book meant for a younger population (ages 9 and up) but, when you don't have that much time to study or really need it as a quick reference it will the job with ease. I used it to help me pass the CSET which is a teaching requirement.

The organization of the book is fantastic! Color coded edges to the right let you know what era in history you're reading about and which items pertain to that specific era in time. The images are colorful and the book is abundant with them. They have clear bold titles which help you remember what you're reading about. Also, at the end of a specific item there is a mini-summary to help you remember the major points that were talked about.

This book is great and in fact, all of the "Everything You Need To Know About..." series are all pretty much the same and are incredibly knowledgeable and specific. You can brush up on the major points in World History or use it as a teaching reference or a parent reference for the home. Trust me, your kids/students will love this book and they'll love you for buying it for them.

Awesome English Reference

As a home schooler I continually search for quality books at an affordable price. This book was an excellent find. The amount of information included here is exceptional. One look at the table of contents, I was sold. It covers topics from the history of language and alphabets to creative writing and reading literature, and of course, all the basics are here too. Each section is color coded for quick and easy reference. "Everything You Need To Know About English" makes English easy and understandable. This little book is not just a great value for the home schooling household, but should be in every home with school aged children or where anyone may need a well prepared English reference book.

Every household needs this book!

This is a very concise, yet thorough look at our language. It starts with the history of languages, the percentage of the world population that speak the most common languages, a diagram of Indo-European languages and which one evolved from what. It defines terms like "semantics", "phonetics", "phonemics", "phonics", "morphemics", etc. It gives nine different alphabets, including sign language, smoke signals and morse code. It gives examples of Hebrew and Japanese. There are some very informative drawings of the mouth, and how sounds are made.
And that's just the first 15 pages.
If you want to know what the "CAT" in CAT scan stands for, or why we write "please R.S.V.P." on party invitations, you can find the answers here.
This book is very nicely laid out, easy to read and aesthetic, with nice pictures and lots of color. There is just tons of information in this book, but it's not weighty or difficult to understand. Unlike a typical textbook, one piece can be understood at a time - one doesn't need to start from the beginning and read all the way through it.
I knew this book would be useful for my kids, but when I read the page that completely - and simply - defined "past perfect tense", "present perfect tense" and "future perfect tense", I was sold. I immediately called my friend who is the head teacher at a K-12 school, and told her she needed to get this book! (Turns out she already has it, and uses it all the time with her students.)
I can't say enough good things about this book!

The term functional foods was fi rst introduced in Japan in the middle of the 1980s for the processed foods containing ingredients with some specifi c bioactivity and health benefi ts in addition to being nutritious. But the concept is originating from Hippocrates: We are what we eat - and it is really true. Nowadays, the importance of producing foods and food components with benefi cial physiological effects over and above the basic nutrients is increasing. Nutrition science and food biochemistry has moved from the original goal of avoiding nutrient defi ciencies or antinutritives to the concept of positive and optimal nutrition. Researchers are focusing on the identifi cation of bioactive molecules in foods, which have preventive effect and decrease the risk of different diseases or help maintaining the optimal physical and mental health. Many foods contain bioactive components, which typically occur in small quantities, like vitamins, polyphenols, or carotenoids, and play important roles in prevention and health promotion. This book, by combining scientifi c access with practical usefulness, contains a wide range of information on the effect of bioactive compounds and their presence in different foods. Functional Foods, Nutraceuticals and Natural Products focuses on these food components, which have bioactive effect in the human body. Anthony Good is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, and formerly Head of the School of Social & Political Science. His research interests cover Tamil Nadu (South India), and Sri Lanka. He frequently acts as an expert witness in asylum appeals involving Sri Lankan Tamils. His recent research concerns uses of expert evidence in British asylum courts, and (with Robert Gibb) a comparative study of asylum processes in the UK and France. Gilles Tarabout is Emeritus ’Directeur de Recherche’ at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and formerly head of the Centre for Ethnology and Comparative Sociology (LESC), at the University of Paris West-Nanterre. His research focuses especially on relationships between society and religion in Kerala (South India). A FASCINATING CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEBATE ON THE CONCEPT OF PROOF AND DOUBT

‘Of Doubt and Proof’ is a title that could have come straight from Dostoyevsky. But no -- this book is in fact a scholarly examination by ten international contributors, including the three editors, of ‘doubt and proof’ -- that often perplexing duality which, like it or not, is part and parcel of the process of judgment and judging across a range of contexts, from judgments in a court of law to -- when you come to think it -- decisions by cricketing umpires, or indeed Taiwanese diviners, as three of the distinguished contributors to this book have set out either to discuss or prove.

The contributors are distinguished indeed. With university backgrounds ranging from, for example, Copenhagen and Edinburgh to Hamburg and Oxford and a range of academic institutions in France, they bring a dizzyingly diverse array of impressive credentials to this particular forum of discussion and enquiry.

As the editors explain, the book is based on a panel of the same title which took place during the Biennial Conference of the European Association for Social Anthropology (EASA) at the Universite Paris Ouest, at Nanterre in 2012. Recognized as ‘the principal event in the European Conference calendar’ and organized around the theme of ‘Uncertainty and Disquiet’ the conference – to summarise – set out to examine ways in which notions of doubt and states of doubting have generally been understood across a variety of academic disciplines.

Fundamentally, say the editors, ‘the individual contributions reveal and illustrate the range of techniques employed in dispelling doubt’, not only in ritual contexts, but in formal legal procedures, (as the sub-title indicates). The aim, they add, is to ‘deepen theoretical understandings of the social role of doubt, both in social science and in law.’

One could remark here that it is the lawyers of this world, as well as judges of course, who would, we think, derive maximum fascination from this admittedly multidisciplinary overview of doubt and proof, that is tackled from a number of different viewpoints and certainly from, yes, different disciplines, including law and jurisprudence – (obviously), to social science and anthropology, (not quite so obviously).

The end result emerges as, in the words of Deborah James of the London School of Economics ‘a rigorous contribution to the novel field of the anthropology of doubt and evidence,’ which demonstrates ‘how law and ritual have much more in common than formerly supposed.’

A recent publication from Ashgate’s ‘Juris Diversitas’ series, this is a stunningly original book that should certainly occasion endless debate at high tables and in common rooms, not to mention robing rooms in court buildings where English barristers strive to ensure that in all cases – and without exception – that justice is done.

While agreeing with much of the content of this book, they -- and certainly the judges -- would say, almost without any doubt whatsoever, that in the common law, it is the quality of the argument that refines the decision. See, for example, Anthony Good’s article on ‘The Benefit of the Doubt in British Asylum Claims and International Cricket’. Touching on ‘standard of proof’, ‘reasonable doubt’, credibility and so forth -- this is one of the most lucid explanations of the concept of ‘the benefit of the doubt’ in common law systems as you’re likely to find anywhere.

Rooted in comparative law, the book will be of interest to a wide range of academics, students and practitioners, particularly those with an international orientation who wish to keep abreast of current thinking in this and other related areas of law.
