Sergei Kasparian is also a chess composition lover, which is why, at the end of this book, I introduced some of his most interesting studies.

Years of delightful thinking

The chess study is a chess problem of the type: White to move and win, or, White to move and draw. The author defines a "miniature chess study" as one that involves a total of 7 pieces or less on the board. So, it's like resolving an end-game situation. This book is a classic collection of miniature studies. Now I like chess problems - although I am not particularly skilled at solving them. In this book, the solution appears under the diagram that sets out the study. Normally I find this annoying because you can't help looking at the solution. But when I read the solution to the first problem, it was truly delightful. So I changed my tune and decided that I will read this book for enjoyment. I will read the problems and their solutions to enjoy the solutions rather than to take delight(?) in solving (or more likely not solving) the problems. I assume that +- under a problem means "White to move and win" and "=" under a problem means "White to move and draw": this could have been explained. The author is famous in chess problem circles; look him up. The English is delightful. It's a nice book to hold: good size, well bound; would fit well in my brief case; many photographs are scattered throughout the book; it would make a good present for a chess enthusiast; you won't find this book in your corner store; it will provide me with years of delightful thinking.

Relatively good quality printing with clear diagrams

This will take a lifetime of study. Relatively good quality printing with clear diagrams. Lots of material, so diagrams and solutions somewhat crammed together, which means you'll need to read with an index card to hide solutions. If you are a patzer like me, you'll need to set up on a board.
