useless but light

I'm not sure who this book was written for. Stephenson makes such a half-hearted attempt to explain things that he could only have assumed that the reader would either (1) already know the material well enough to follow along, or (2) have another, more detailed book on PDEs to go along with this one. In either case, why would anybody need this book?
The text is maddeningly vague, and examples are often left unfinished, have important steps missing, and generally have little to do with the end-of-chapter problems. There are only a handful of solutions in the back (solutions only, mind you, with no explanation of how they were found), and these seem to have been chosen at random. As with too many academic math books, the only good thing about this one is that it's small and won't take up too much space in your bag.
