The Heartbreak Messenger, by Alexander Vance

Breaking up is hard to do—so why not pay someone to do it for you?

Twelve-year-old Quentin never asked to be the Heartbreak Messenger. It just kind of happened, and he can't let a golden opportunity pass him by. The valuable communication service he offers is simple: He delivers breakup messages. For a small fee, he will deliver that message to your soon-to-be ex. If you order the deluxe package, he'll even throw in some flowers and a box of chocolates. You know . . . to soften the blow.

At first, Quentin's entrepreneurial brainchild is surprisingly successful, which is great, because he suspects his mom, who works as a car mechanic, is worried about money. But as he interacts with clients, message recipients, and his best friend, Abigail, it doesn't take long for him to wonder if his own heart will remain intact. In The Heartbreak Messenger by Alexander Vance, Quentin discovers that the game of love and the emotions that go with it are as complicated as they come—even for an almost-innocent bystander.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8–When his best friend's brother wants to break up with his girlfriend but doesn't know how, Quentin agrees to do it for him for $20. He never expects it to turn into a business, but after being successful and taking the ex's advice to soften the blow with flowers and chocolate, he becomes the heartbreak messenger. Wanting to help out his car-mechanic mother with what he assumes are money problems, he takes on more breakups. However, most of them are not so simple. He gets punched by a girl, has to figure out how to break up with two girls at the same time without telling them about each other, and must comfort an enormous football player whose heart is broken. As he struggles to keep his business and his body safe from harm, he finds himself with conflicting feelings about his other best friend, Abby. When her boyfriend asks for his services, Quentin must decide about his true feelings for her. Quentin is a likable and funny narrator. His confusion over his feelings for Abby is authentic, and his decision that he is not ready to pursue a romantic relationship will strike a chord with other preteens. This clever read will find an audience with both boys and girls.–Kefira Phillipe, Nichols Middle School, Evanston, ILα(c) Copyright 2013. Breaking up is hard to do, but not if you have the Heartbreak Messenger do it for you. For 20 bucks he will deliver a breakup message to your soon-to-be ex. But who is the man behind the myth? None other than 13-year-old Quentin, who invents the surprisingly lucrative business after assisting his friend’s older brother. Quentin finds being a professional relationship ender harder—and more dangerous—than he expected, but he doesn’t fully understand the emotional fallout until he is hired by the boyfriend of his best friend, Abby. The situations Quentin finds himself in are humorous and heartfelt, often underscoring his own cluelessness about Abby’s true feelings. With strong supporting characters and an appealing lead, this funny, feel-good tale is perfect for those beginning to think about dating. Grades 5-8. --Krista Hutley

Definitely worth a read--clean and funny!
By L. Horn
I work in an elementary library (K-6th) and I read a LOT of middle-level and YA books in the hopes of being able to match up kids with books when they ask for recommendations.

I really enjoyed this story. It had lots of funny lines in it--ones that were funny enough I had to read them aloud to my 16-year-old, who also laughed. As a parent of a tween (as well as a teen), I appreciate that it kept the language clean and actually had a really nice message at the end about your life not having to revolve around having a girlfriend/boyfriend, but just having friends that you enjoy hanging out with.

Definitely have to agree with one of the earlier posts about the cover art, though. Yeah, it's cute and all, but I think the cover art earmarks it as being a "girl" book, when that's just not the case. This would be an awesome book for 5th-8th grade boys to read...but I have trouble believe that any self-respecting teenage boy would be caught dead reading a book with this cover!

Light hearted fun with a great message.
By J.Prather
The Heartbreak Messenger is a fun, light hearted read with a good message that is sure to appeal to young readers who are curious about all this boyfriend/girlfriend business, but are not quite ready to go there themselves. This book gets my award for best middle grade cover of the year. I'm sure it will fly off our library shelves when kids get a peek at those candy hearts. Quentin kind of falls into his messenger job by accident when he agrees to handle the break up duties for his best friend's older brother. When he learns how easy it is, how much money he can make, and most importantly, that his mom might need some extra funds, he starts developing his break up service into a viable business. He soon learns though that everything is not as easy as it seems, nor as black and white as he imagined. Things are changing for him, his friends and his family, and it's the process through which he begins to deal with these changes that makes The Heartbreak Messenger a book that every kid ages 11-13 will be able to relate to with ease.

One of my favorite things about this book is the great relationship between Quentin and his mother. It's realistic, not perfect, but so filled with love and mutual respect that it really stands out. This is a fast read, and even though the ending might be a bit heavy handed, it delivers a valuable message as Quentin tells his friend that at age 13, he's not ready for a girlfriend. He sees it as a commitment and has decided to approach relationships with a sense of responsibility. A great topic that I don't see dealt with a lot in literature for this age group. The Heartbreak Messenger is light reading that could find a place on any tween or young teen's list this summer.

Very cute, with a wonderful cover
By Jennifer Miller
Summary:
Quentin is just hanging out with his friend Rob when Rob's older brother complains about how hard it is to break up with a girl. He gives Quentin $20 and Quentin does it for him. At first Quentin was nervous, but he quickly realized that it wasn't nearly as difficult as he anticipated. Soon after, he finds out that his mother is having some trouble paying bills, so Quentin decides to expand his break-up business. In the process, he learns a lot about relationships and the responsibility that is needed to be in one. When his other best friend Abby begins dating, he also realizes that he might have feelings he didn't know about before. Throughout the story, Quentin grows a lot (as any 7th grade boy will), and figures out several lessons about love and life.

My thoughts:
This book is adorable. Quentin ends up in some silly situations, but really is a star protagonist. He is definitely a sweetheart. I also appreciated the strong relationship between Quentin and his mother. In so many tween books, the parental figure is not available or ridiculously negligent. Quentin's mother is not perfect but she definitely does everything she can for Quentin.

Overall, this was a fun book. For older middle school/high school students, it will be a very quick read; however, 4th grade or higher would easily get into the book and enjoy it.
