Fun and Creative

Based on an old folktale of a fisherman who catches a magic fish and ends up making wishes for his greedy wife, this story adds an interesting twist. Written as a Rap the story offfers a good rhyme scheme and the tape that usually comes with it is very good. It may even teach a lesson about taking advantage of a good thing.

Kenneth D. Kok, P.E., has had 40 years of varied experience in the nuclear industry. He is currently a Fellow Engineer with WSMS Mid-America in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, providing support for the WSMS Clients group as a nuclear safety engineer and an independent technical reviewer. Kok has served as the chair of the ASME Nuclear Engineering Division, directed the ASME course related to D&D, and supported the ICEM and ICONE meetings as a track leader and session chair. He has also seved as the Co-Chair of ICEM.

Trees, not forest, and badly edited

This book claims to be addressed not only to engineers and engineering students and teachers, but to "science and technology journalists and interested members of the general public" (@ix). If you're within that quoted bit, however, you're likely to find the book quite frustrating to use, whatever your opinions about nuclear power. (Needless to say, all the contributors are fans.) In fact, I imagine quite a few professionals might get annoyed by it as well.

The editor seems to have conceived his job simply as a traffic coordinator for assembling the chapters and writing brief section introductions (as well as contributing a chapter of his own). However, the contents are desperately in need of editorial attention. Often acronyms are used before they are defined, and occasionally without definition at all (e.g. in Section I, about reactor types). Neither the book as a whole not any individual chapter includes a list of acronyms, and while a few can be puzzled out by scanning the rather inadequate index (e.g., PXS -- though you'll have to look under letter 'A' to find it), some (such as ADS) are neither indexed nor defined within the pertinent chapter.

The writing style is about as exciting as you might expect from engineers -- long paragraphs, mostly in the passive voice. It's often repetitious; e.g., we're told twice within five pages that U-238's half-life is the same as the age of the earth, and twice on facing pages that uraninite is the main primary uranium ore mineral (Chap. 7). The prose is especially deadly in Section I. The day I started reading this book I drank not only an espresso but a pot of tea, and I still had trouble staying awake. Really. Perhaps an editor can't be expected to turn contributors into terrific writers, but he might be expected to flag self-contradicting monstrosities like this: "[T]he normal -- mass 1 atom, often called 'protium' -- hydrogen in light water is more effective in reducing the energy of neutrons than is the heavier deuterium atom -- the stable, mass 2 form of hydrogen -- but it [sic] has a far lower propensity to absorb neutrons than protium." (@142-143). By the way, **five authors** as well as the editor thought that sentence was OK.

As for the contents, there is a heavy emphasis on nuts and bolts in the most literal sense -- as well as on flanges, impellers, and other mechanical engineering components. There are numerous illustrations of particular subsystems (e.g. steam generators, reactor cooling pumps, etc.) but the verbal descriptions often are far more detailed than one can follow from the illustrations themselves. Other illustrations, such as systems diagrams for hydraulic flows, are geared specifically for engineers and will be less legible to the purported general audience. For the most part, the book is written from a US point of view, though a couple of chapters (4 and 15, on heavy water reactors and their fuel cycle) have a more Canadian spin. British units (pounds, inches, etc.) are used primarily, and sometimes exclusively. Nonetheless, the discussion is mostly qualitative -- equations are relegated to a couple of chapters near the end of the book on neutronics and heat transfer/thermal hydraulics.

A lot is missing from the book. For one, a disinterested comparison of the pros and cons of different reactor types. A retired guy from Westinghouse wrote about his company's pressurized water reactors (PWRs), a guy from GE wrote about his company's boiling water reactors (BWRs), five Canadians wrote about the CANDU heavy-water reactor (HWR), etc. The Canadians especially were good about explaining what they think are the advantages of their design, but no one talks about the drawbacks, or more generally how a particular reactor type is well-suited for a particular situation. Nor is there even an explanation for why PWRs are the most popular design currently. Also missing is much sense of the evolution of reactors. Especially for BWRs and PBRs the emphasis is on the latest and greatest versions, and on the types immediately preceding. If you'd like to know about the 1970s-vintage BWRs that melted through in Fukushima, you will only be able to glean the most general information, and that with some difficulty. The impact of control-room design is another absentee. A table in the BWR chapter distinguishes between system-based and operator task-based control room design, but the benefits of one or the other, to say nothing of human factors generally, are never discussed, in any chapter.

As one might expect, the environmental and other downsides of nuclear power aren't treated in depth. The chapter on mining has this to say about ISL operations (the acronym isn't defined in the book, BTW, though we're told it's also known as "solution mining"): "With ISL operations, the orebody stays in the ground and uranium is recovered by circulating oxygenated and acidified groundwater through it, using injection and recovery wells. The main environmental consideration with ISL is avoiding pollution of groundwater away from the orebody, and leaving the immediate groundwater no less useful than it was initially." Period. Just enough to get you scared, perhaps, because the book is silent on how those environmental goals are accomplished (or not). In the final chapter, on economics of nuclear power, all environmental impacts are externalized -- i.e., ignored. Forget about any mention of the greenhouse gas budget of the nuclear power cycle (construction of plant, fuel cycle, operations, decommissioning, waste storage and treatment, etc.) The author even asserts that *health benefits* of low-level radiation exposure (no citation is offered) will result in relaxed regulations, leading to even greater cost advantages for nuclear power. I might hope the lessons of Fukushima, which also include significant logistical and reputational economic impacts as well as environmental ones, will be reflected in a future edition; though since even Chernobyl is barely mentioned in the book, it would no doubt be an unfulfilled hope.

As would be a hope for some "solution mining" technique to help one get the useful information from this book without much time and trouble. There's certainly a lot of useful information in it. But be warned that it is not disinterested, not big-picture, and not easy to dig out.

Premature

Amazon has asked me to review the Nuclear Engineering Handbook which I purchased less than three weeks ago. This book is hundreds of page of highly technical information. What's wrong with this picture? It will take me the better part of year to decide how useful it will be and whether I am better off having it or not. That's what's wrong.

A gentle, romantic tale

I brought this novella on a whim - my usual reading fare is sci-fi - I must say I am glad that I did. Denise Domning has written a lovely romantic gem that is, while short, a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Avice and Jos make a perfectly suited couple - both are suffering mentally from very separate issues. Avice thinks Jos doesn't want to marry her and is angry when she is pursuaded by her well-meaning parents and Jocelyn's mother, Elyssa, to make a visit to Jos for Christmas. Jos is recovering from wounds received in battle and trying, not so well, to manage the mental pain of survivor's guilt. I wont give more of the plot away, suffice to say this gentle, romantic tale is a must read.

Too Bad It Isin't A Novel

My only disappointment with the book is that it is in a short story format. It was paced too quickly for me to find parts of it believable. I really wish this had been written as a full length story from the time they were betrothed, through Jos' going to France and what happened there, then back to meeting Avice .

I really enjoyed the Season's series and have like both books in the Season of the Raven series. I probably won't read another in this series since I really don't care for novellas.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I wish the story was longer...I enjoyed all of Ms. Domning's stories, They completely transform you back to the time of 11th & 12th Century England, she makes you feel as if you are a part of the stories. You feel as if you know the characters personally. I will read all of her books.

A book-long advertisement for her DVDs and workshops

This book doesn't describe what her method is. It provides a description of the science behind the method and lots of stories about how the method has helped people, but it doesn't say what you do. The method may be fantastic and effective, but you're not going to learn how to do it here. I had already read Norman Doidge's The Brain That Changes Itself, which gives a deeper description of the science, and I'm not interested in the testimonials, so for me, the book offered nothing.

Revolutionary. Saved My Life.

I am a living example of the miracles that are possible by applying the techniques and scientifically sound neuroplasticity-based therapy--specifically Annie Hopper's Dynamic Neural Retraining System--written about in her incredible, profound, ground-breaking first book, "Wired For Healing." Hopper's cutting-edge approach to healing "mystery" illnesses through re-wiring the brain and healing its dysfunctional, impaired, injured limbic system (that which processes trauma and gets "stuck" in a traumatic loop, and thus begins "cross-wiring" and improperly filtering information, thus producing strange and frightening physiological responses) is not only revolutionary, in the big picture scheme of things for millions out there suffering from limbic system disorders due to trauma/injury--but for myself, it literally saved my life. Not just changed it, but gave me my life back. Literally.

Before my injury, I was a happy, passionate, fearless, confident, independent, successful, vitally healthy, world-traveler. As a result of a combined injury from mold biotoxin illness/black mold exposure and a pharmaceutical injury (overdoses at the hands of doctors) in the midst of several other traumatic incidents, including a car accident and a pregnancy loss--at my lowest point I was in an wheelchair, unable to walk, bedridden for months and in ER's and hospitalized dozens of times, had severe POTS (Postural Orthoststatic Tachycardia Syndrome, aka heart rate racing over 100 BPM upon standing) and life-threatening anaphylactic reactions to everything--food, medicines, chemicals, perfumes, exhaust, electricity, the environment, life itself--and could only eat 2 foods. I weighed 83 lbs. I was housebound for several years (and could not travel outside of my small town) and if I left the house I wore a mask everywhere ~ a "girl in a bubble," allergic to the world, who was totally dependent on others to survive. I lived in constant fear, a result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from so many frightening "life or death" experiences. (And I wasn't afraid of dying, I was afraid of being terrorized and further traumatized, while alive.) I had no quality of life left. I was frightened, depressed, miserable and a shadow of my former, once joyous and thriving, healthy self.

I shelled out huge amounts of money over a 10 year period, I literally tried everything. Every healing modality, every protocol, everything you can think of, to the Nth degree and back again. NOTHING worked. Some things worked a bit, but I would end up back in the same place, or worse. I felt cursed. (And as someone who helped others heal, by profession, I took it extra hard that no matter what I did, I could not "heal myself.") I always knew there was some missing link--but I couldn't figure out what it was, and I no longer had the time, energy, money or mental faculties or acuity to continue to dig. I almost gave up. Actually I did, several times--but then I would pick myself back up and try again. But I was depressed, unhappy and chronically ill with a list of symptoms and grievances longer than the Gettysburg address. I was told by doctors, both traditional and environmental, that it was unlikely that I would ever recover from this list of chronic illnesses and would have to live with them for the rest of my life and learn to adapt. But I couldn't adapt to a life that was no life at all. I was losing the will to live.

And then, like a shot out of the blue, when I had almost given up all hope, like an answered prayer--that's when I found Annie Hopper's work, and the Dynamic Neural Retraining System. Although by that point, I was naturally filled with skepticism and doubt (as most people with Limbic System Impairment are, due to their experiences), even with my initial resistance to it, a part of me intuitively and innately knew that this was the missing link. After seeing Annie's description of Limbic System Injury and its effects on YouTube (now beautifully and thoroughly detailed in this book, for you) as well as the testimonials of people just like me, it made sense--and if other people could recover--why couldn't I? I wept at their stories, and of their re-claimed lives. So I gave it one last chance. On my last leg, I purchased the DVDs and then when I was well enough to do so (yes, that happened from the DVDs), I got myself to an in person Limbic System Rehabilitation Program (2013), hosted by the inimitable, awe-inspiring powerhouse Annie Hopper and the fantastic Candy Widdifield. What happened after that is beyond words, so I will just cut to the chase. I have a New Life. I am now 100% fully and completely recovered from ALL of those conditions.

I did the 5 day in person program and the 6 months of daily neuroplasticity-based therapy/brain re-wiring exercises, in order to repair the injury in the limbic system--which is stuck in an unconscious/subconscious maladapted stress response--and to restore it to proper functioning. (And I continue to do the practices to this day, for the outstanding quality of life they give me.) Initially, it was incredibly hard work and constant, relentless dedicated effort and unwavering commitment, 24/7--that's what it takes to rewire and remap the infrastructure of your brain, down to the level of the unconscious, which runs your biology--but every single second was and IS worth it, to re-claim your entire life. BEYOND worth it. As Annie says: "It's hard work--working for a miracle!" And when, like me, you are healthy and free to live your life again, unfettered and unbound from what once felt like a prison--you will thank the heavens, and Annie Hopper, each and every day--for giving you the key to unlock yourself from your hellish cell, to free yourself back out into the world again. And I did it. I healed myself, with the priceless gift of Annie's technology, and the indispensable support of the DNRS coaches and forum.

What can I do now? Everything. You name it. I can go anywhere and do anything and eat and drink anything I want, anytime I want, with ease, grace, and confidence. Not only can I smell perfumes, but I often truly enjoy them and can wear them if I would like. (That's if I even notice them anymore, which I rarely do, and if I do, it's positive.) I can sit in crowds and go to the theater. I can go to stores, malls, concerts--take my daughter to see Santa at Christmas! I can eat at restaurants, go to huge parties, get stuck in traffic on the freeway. I can go on road-trips and stay in hotels, easy peasy. I can dine outdoors on crowded streets, go to museums, parades, festivals, galleries, go dancing -- have a drink at a bar! I can eat nuts and ALL things that I used to have anaphylactic reactions to. (Can you imagine?) I can go to brand new, freshly painted buildings, no problem. I can be in old buildings. I can travel. I can work. I can paint my nails, have facials and get highlights in my hair! This is HUGE. (UNTHINKABLE for nearly 8 years! And a BIG deal for a woman.) I can be alone, If I would like. I am independent and thriving! I am the Mom, the partner and the woman that I want to be. I can do ANYTHING I want, without a second thought! I am a normal person again. I can take medicine. I've even had anesthesia and a surgical procedure and sailed through it with ease, unimaginable before! I love myself and I love my life. I can wear make-up, use hairspray, drive my daughter to school. The everyday little things that most people take for granted, all of which are MIRACLES for me. I AM a MIRACLE.

But most importantly--I am HAPPY. Not only as happy as I was before the injury, but even happier than I can remember. And that may be the biggest miracle of all: alongside my restored health, vitality and well-being (with the lab results to prove it), my quality of life has been profoundly transformed, beyond measure. I am happy and joyous, I laugh and sing and dance--life and I are best friends again and I savor every single second of it. I am in love with life again, and I feel safe in the world and in my body. I am calm and capable and confident, with a renewed vigor and zest and passion for life that I thought was gone. I am happier than I've been in 15 years, maybe truly happier than I've ever been in my entire life, now that I have mastery over my brain and am in the driver's seat--now having witnessed and lived firsthand what miracles are possible through harnessing the power of the brain. That I am, and we are, indeed, truly--wired for healing. All we need is a map and a little toolbox, and Annie's got one. And it's a science. Neuroscience. It's a brain injury that causes the symptoms, and when the injury is addressed at the root, it addresses everything. What Annie has created, like a brilliant engineer, a neuroplastician, is a technology that works, if you apply it. As she says, "With this protocol, the brain has no other choice but to change." And the body follows. Get the book. Trust me.

This book is a ground breaker. Annie Hopper did all the research, developed the program and has now written the book which explains all the mystery illnesses of our time. It's readable. She simplifies the science. If you have ever had an illness that defied medecine or left you limited and hopeless, get this book. It will be the game changer. Even if you are not sick with an immune system illness, MCS, fibro, CFS and you just want to manage stress, get this book so you will understand how to act back on your body through the use of your mind and brain. Mine is marked up, underlined and highlighted, as one does when so much of what one is reading jumps off the page. Lives are changing. Great job, Annie Hopper.

About the Author

Dr. Harold W. Baillie is the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Scranton. He has been a visiting professor at a variety of international universities, including the University of Trnava, Slovakia, the State Medical University in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and Capital University of Economics and Business, Beijing, China. Domestically, he has been a visiting professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, and Ashland University. He is a co-author of the book Health Care Ethics: Principles and Problems, and co-editor, and contributing author, of Is Human Nature Obsolete? Genetics, Bioengineering and the Human Condition, from The MIT Press. He has authored articles on subjects ranging from healthcare ethics to metaphysics and political philosophy, and currently works as a medical ethics consultant with several local health care facilities. He received his A.B. from Yale University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Boston College.

John F. McGeehan, MD, is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU). Prior to joining CMSRU, Dr. McGeehan participated in the development of another new medical school, The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, PA. where, among many roles, he was course director for The Profession of Medicine in which he taught medical ethics. He has also been a course director at Temple University School of Medicine, and was Director of Medical Education and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mercy Hospital in Scranton.

Dr. McGeehan received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital. He created the Ethics Committee at Mercy Hospital in Scranton which he chaired for many years and currently is on the Ethics Committee at Cooper University Hospital where he does ethics consults.
