While Rune Magic is an awesome book I highly suggest you check out Pennick’s book

While Rune Magic is an awesome book I highly suggest you check out Pennick’s book, Complete Illustrated Guide to Runes. Not only is it a more mature book than Rune Magic, it’s also more concise and illustrated with hundreds of beautiful images and drawings. While Rune Magic has more depth on the magical aspects of the Runes it’s marginal compared to the key points both books share.
The fact that many authors have borrowed from Pennick shows his importance in modern Rune history. As to his particular approach I would say he’s a fusionist. He does honor tradition by giving the reader the traditional associations and correspondences for the Runes while at the same time adding his own. Some of his influences are Shamanism, the Celtic Tradition, and Continental Occultism.
An example of his personal correspondences for Wunjo are:
Numerical Meaning: Balance
Color: Yellow
Plant: Flax
Tree: Ash
Essential Oil: Marigold
Element: Earth
Polarity: Male
Time of Day: 19:30-20:30
Month: October 13th
Deity: Óðinn and Frigg
Magic operations: True will and finding higher balance and harmony.
While I do not connect with some of his correspondences I did find some fruitful to meditate on. All-in-all Rune Magic is a good book. If you have the money I would say go ahead and get both books. If on the other hand you are strapped for money I highly suggest you get his Illustrated Guide to Runes for the reasons I stated in the beginning of my review.

Not your ususal 'cookbook' of runic divination.

In these pages Nigel Pennick not only gives you the history of all the known rune rows with their divinitory meanings, but adds in correspondences to Northern Deities, colors, trees, herbs, numerology, etc. Practical uses of runes such as sigils and bindrunes are also covered. Be aware though that this book was reissued by Thorsons in 1995 with the title "Secrets of the Runes". Not Bad

This is a really good book. It explores the runes and thier magick well, though if your just starting out, I'd wait until you've got a basic understanding first. I started with this book and found it to be a little confusing, but it is a must have for any collection.
