About the Author
Alexandra Sokoloff is the Thriller Award-winning and Bram Stoker, Anthony, and Black Quill award-nominated author of eleven supernatural, paranormal and crime thrillers, including the Thriller Award-nominated Huntress/FBI series (Huntress Moon, Blood Moon, Cold Moon, Wolf Moon). The New York Times Book Review has called her a "daughter of Mary Shelley," and her books "Some of the most original and freshly unnerving work in the genre."

As a screenwriter Alex has sold original scripts and adapted novels for numerous Hollywood studios, for producers such as David Heyman, Laura Ziskin, Michael Bay and Neal Moritz. Best Book on Writing I've Ever Purchased!

I was lucky enough to take Alexandra's class at WTWA in Canyon, TX. Admittedly I was nervous about it because I considered myself to be a pantster not a plotter. In class I even went so far as to announce that I might only listen without applying the methods helpfully outlined in her book. So not the case. I plotted a whole book from scratch in four days. Not only that, but I went back to my WIP, which had reached the soggy middle and reworked it with her structure method. Guess what? My WIP is no longer my WIP because I'm done with it. You can use as much or as little of Alexandra's technique as you like. It's a guide and a different perspective that helps you think your way through with intelligence and intent. You want this book!

Should be on every author's shelf!

The idea of plotting used to leave me crying in the fetal position. But this great, insightful book turned that around with a kind, encouraging voice and tips that makes even those most fervent pantster feel at ease with a plot board. This book is going to be my go-to for many stories to come!

At last: In hard copy format

This is the long-awaited updated, hard-copy edition of one of two supplements used in Alex's West Texas A&M summer class. A fantastic value, especially in the age of $150+ textbooks. Alex thoroughly explains the craft of plotting, including a LOT of movie analyses. She's a master and a very nice person. Anybody who's serious about writing fiction, or narrative non-fiction, needs this book. Also, if you're super-serious, her West Texas A&M class is phenomenal. She's a knowledge powerhouse, the kind of person you just want to follow around with a tape recorder because she's constantly offering some tidbit of important information about plotting, genres, archetypes and the like. She gives personal attention to each of her 15 students' plots and walks them through from opening sequence to final denouement. I took her class three times and still could take it again because her well is so deep. Also check out Writing Love, which has other movie plot analyses but, alas, is not yet in hard copy format.

Learning to play again at the age of 59+

Folks,

I started playing - or at least trying when I was in the third grade. I didn't play much beyond two more years due to lousy instructors and even lousier music picks. Life passed on, and finally, I came upon these books. I purchased all three of this series and started out fresh. I've now been playing (self taught) for about 5 months. Yes, I still stumble and make it sound bad from time to time, but these books have given me the confidence that if I practice and practice, I can sound great. Other people have listened to me play, and they just cannot believe what they are hearing.

I even bought the entire series for my 81 yr old mother to start playing again with. I guess that pretty much sums it up.

BTW, if you change it up some, "Little Brown Jug" can become "My Ding-A-Ling"!

Self Study piano learning

Really like this book, already got the second in the series for when I finish the first. If you want to learn piano, and you are a busy person, this is the way to go. I like that the book also discusses a bit of music theory. There are instructions on how to write music, how to read music, and how to play. Really really excellent. The only thing to remember is that if you don't have a piano teacher beside you you can be messing up your technique unwittingly, so if that is an issue self study would probably not be for you. LOVE IT!!

A Super book and /dvd

If I could I would give this book 10 stars, I played piano and organ about 30 years ago and just recently at the age of 93 revived my music, bought an organ and later an electric piano. The organ and I got along very well, but the piano was a different story. After trying many "how to books" I purchased this book. Wow! What a difference - my piano and I are now good friends and I have learned so much from this book and DVD and I am still learning. I have been thru the book twice and still find other things to learn, If you are a budding pianist, and want to learn without a teacher I highly recommend this book. All of Alfred's book are good.

Very lucid

I have to admit, when I first started reading the book, I was ready to dismiss it all as nonsense...I mean really, vectors are arrows, not a stack or thumbtack or any of the other "flavors" of vectors that are introduced in the book. I kept reading, and eventually the light clicked on...maybe I'm slow. Or maybe I simply still bear the bruises from my high school physics teacher beating the whole "arrow: magnitude and direction" aspect of vectors into me.

Weinreich discusses vectors, in their many forms (contravariant, covariant, etc), almost entirely divorced from anything to do with physical laws. Relying on our natural human intuition and perception capabilities, this book explores the definition and manipulation of vectors and vector fields as simple geometric objects existing in three dimensional space where rulers are forbidden. Along the way, we learn about the simplicity, power, and if I may dare say, the beauty, of the branch of mathematics known as vector analysis.

This is a great book to accompany a course or a more traditional book on the topic (e.g. Gravitation). I found the book to be easy to read and comprehend (and I am an engineer, not a physicist or mathematician). I think some of the figures could have used a little work, seeing how the whole book is based on geometry arguments.

A great companion to math and physics

This book is deep! While lacking the formal rigor of vector analysis or exterior calculus this book attempts to remedy the lack of intuition that often accompanies such treatments (read the preface of the book).
In this book the author sneaks in clifford algebra, forms and applications to physics, he gives us a method of calculation that opens up the vector calculus you already knew and gives a great way to 'draw' many phenomenon in physics.
The author has an important agenda in this volume and that is to distinguish between objects that naturally behave differently. It has been the legacy of Gibbs and Heaviside for us to flounder in the 3-d application/misapplication of Hamiliton's quaternions. The reader is led to realize that identifying everything with contravariant vectors (arrows) is wrong and damaging to our intuition of phenomenon.
I highly recommend this book. It may seem hokey at first with odd names like thumbtack and swarm but it portrays deep mathematics in a beautiful manner. Work hard on it, apply it to physics and mathematics and be surprised at what you find! This sort of geometrical analysis is hard to find (try Gravitation by MTW or Applied Differential Geometry by Burke) at this level.
Remember it is meant to be an affordable companion to courses on vector and tensor analysis, and what a companion it is!

Disorganized with some disappointing absences, but still a lot of fun.

On the plus side, this book covers many, many great Marvel characters. The layouts for the individual entries are great, with quality illustrations, pretty concise synopses of character histories, and in general a decent explanation of each character's powers and abilities. The two-page spreads of important storylines are especially well done.

The layout of the book is a mess, however. Entries are broken down into six broad categories of character abilities (one section is for Avengers and villains with powers, one is for the technologically enhanced, one for magical characters, etc.) That's an unusual enough choice, but even within those categories, entries are thrown in a very haphazard order. For something billing itself an "encyclopedia" there's no easy way to reference an entry for a particular character without flipping back to the index every single time (and the index is so full even that is not a quick reference.)

My biggest complaint is the missing characters. There has been internet gossip that the comics publishing wing of Marvel have been deliberately downplaying the roles of the characters from the X-Men and the Fantastic Four because of Marvel films lack of the cinematic rights to these characters. I understand that these characters are all property of a huge corporation that can manage their brand however they see fit. Regardless, it is very disappointing to have an "Avengers Encyclopedia" that has entries for obscure characters such as Silverclaw and Grandmaster, or a full eight pages dedicated to Hank Pym, and no entry whatsoever for prominent Avengers like Beast, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, or The Thing. (These characters are not completely ignored - they appear in illustrations and are mentioned as part of other character bios or storylines; they are simply not given their own entries, which is still ridiculous.)

All told, it is a nice volume with a good balance of information about a wide variety of characters. Perhaps future volumes will be better organized and more comprehensive.

It came on time and it is such an awesome book for someone who loves Marvel's. I have it to my 26yr nephew for Christmas and he just loved it!! Will purchase from this company again!!
