About the Author
Richard Abcarian (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-seven years. During his teaching career, he won two Fulbright professorships. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and its compact edition, he is the editor of a critical edition of Richard Wright's A Native Son, as well as several other literature textbooks.

Marvin Klotz (PhD, New York University) is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-three years and won Northridge's distinguished teaching award in 1983. He is also the winner of two Fulbright professorships (in Vietnam and Iran) and was a National Endowment for the Arts Summer Fellow twice. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and several other textbooks, he coauthored a guide and index to the characters in Faulkner's fiction.

Samuel Cohen (PhD, City University of New York) is Associate Professor of English and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri. He is the author of After the End of History: American Fiction in the 1990s, co-editor (with Lee Konstantinou) of The Legacy of David Foster Wallace, Series Editor of The New American Canon: The Iowa Series in Contemporary Literature and Culture, and has published in such journals as Novel, Clio, Twentieth-Century Literature, The Journal of Basic Writing, and Dialogue: A Journal for Writing Specialists. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is author of 50 Essays: A Portable Anthology and coauthor of Literature: The Human Experience.

About the Author

Dr. Sean Cleary, Ph.D., CFA, is BMO Professor of Finance and Director of the Master of Finance program at Queen's School of Business, Queen's University. Dr. Cleary holds a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Toronto, and an MBA. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder and a former Board member of both the Toronto CFA Society and the Atlantic Canada CFA Society. He has completed the Professional Financial Planning Course (PFPC), the Canadian Securities Course (CSC), as well as the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) Mutual Fund Course. He has been on the faculty at St. Mary's University and the Schulich School of Business, York University, and has taught preparation courses for the Canadian Securities Exam. Dr. Cleary has published numerous articles in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management, the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Multinational Financial Management, the Journal of Financial Research, the International Journal of Managerial Finance, the Canadian Investment Review, and the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences. He is co-author of the first three editions of Introduction to Corporate Finance (Wiley, 2007, 2010, 2013), as well as numerous other finance textbooks.

Cats Rule!

This book is a MUST HAVE for all cat lovers! It is also for history buffs, who happen to love cats, like me. Kathleen Walker-Meikle has worked hard in her field of animals and medicine in the middle ages and this book shows her love of the topic. With illustrations and explanations of the cat, it is awe-inspiring.

Cats! I really had not realized how often cats appear in authentic Medieval illumination. I bought this little book because I'm a history buff, and enjoy recreating scrolls for SCA illumination. Many of my clients want their cats shown, and here are excellent examples of how to do it.

Interesting book with great illustrations

Very interesting book with great illustrations in color. Also, good use of primary sources if you're doing a research paper.

Be advised that if you're a real cat lover, you may find some of the content distressing. Cats had a very mixed reputation in the medieval period and the author covers the bad as well as the good.

I suggest hanging on through the bad parts. If nothing else, they offer some insight into why some people today dislike cats.

Exhilarating, profound, meaningful

Jojo Moyes' words are bullets, and she shoots them straight into your heart.

One Plus One is an absolutely exhilarating novel. Equal parts moving, heartbreaking, hopeful and hilarious, it's a smart and memorable story about one untypical family and their journey to happiness. A journey that includes a painfully slow road-trip to Scotland in a car with a rude boss, two kids and one huge, smelly dog.

Two people. Two completely different worlds. What do they add up to?

Jess' life is as far from easy and privileged as you can imagine. Her husband, depressed because of his steady stream of bad decisions resulting in a complete financial fiasco, went away to spend a couple weeks at his mom's. That was two years ago. With two kids to provide for - one not even her own - and a whole load of other problems (including, but not limited to, bully neighbors, rude employers, and constant lack of money), Jess works her ars off at two jobs. She's one tough gal, she never gives up, always bounces back, no matter what obstacles land in her path. But even this short and feisty Erin Bronkovitch-like woman is not unbeatable. She can't always "sort things out", though God knows she tries her best.

Ed is a disaster of a whole different kind, and kind of of his on making. He's not exactly filthy rich, though he's definitely on the other end of the spectrum from Jess. His job is hugely profitable, he works alongside his best friend, his high-end home is regularly cleaned - and guess who is the cleaner? - and the only thing that he seems to be missing in his life, is love. Due to an unfortunate affair, he finds himself in a lot of trouble. Legal trouble. Very serious, potentially life-devastating trouble.

When Jess' daughter, Tanzie (the math genius), is presented with an opportunity to attend one of the most prestigious schools in London, Jess is willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen for her. It's a chance they can't afford to miss, even tho they literally can't afford the tuition. The ray of hope materializes itself in the form of a math competition, winning which would leave them with a sum of money big enough to make Tanzie's dream of attending a good school in a safe neighborhood come true. Easy enough? Sure, if only the competition wasn't held all the way up in Scotland and you didn't have to drive at an excruciatingly slow pace to get there. In your boss's car.

One Plus One is delightfully charming, unexpectedly romantic and painfully honest. Full of touching scenes, brilliant thoughts and moments of true heartbreak, it's a book as far from mediocre as they come. Easily the most thoughtful and relevant book I've read this year. It's not just a chick lit romance. It's an inspiring and heart-warming family drama. Through her breathtakingly compelling prose and beautifully fleshed out, real characters, Moyes explores some tough subjects, such as bullying, social injustice, poverty, dysfunctional families, solo parenting and all the challenges that come with it, and more. Way, way more.

I cried, I laughed, I sobbed, I got angry.. I fell in love with these people and their story. This book was a journey - full of love, hope, second chances and wisdom - and I am sure I'd be re-taking this journey time and time again.

Satisfying from start to finish

So the premise could have been a bit of a Cinderella cliche - struggling single mother of two, meets wealthy, attractive businessman; they reluctantly end up on a road trip together with her two children (and farting dog), and discover neither person is what they'd first assumed.
It could have been cheesy and obvious, but instead the story twists and turns and has complex, well-defined characters that turn The One Plus One, into a compelling and engaging read. It's a real gift to jump between the voices of a parent, stretched to utmost capacity trying to make it work for her kids, a jaded software developer, an outcast goth teenager and a kooky 10-year-old math genius, but the author nails it.
There's some real social insight into the gap between the rich and the poor which is handled in an authentic and at times hilarious, way. Jojo Moyes understands the humanity of her characters, their motivations for making poor choices and their ability to rise above. The thing about a good Cinderella story is that it pulls you in until you are cheering at the happy ending, and this totally delivers.

Splendid... except for one thing

First off, this book is delightful! I read it from cover to cover on a plane and never once took a break to check out the in-flight movies. I thought it would be a light, sweet read to make the hours pass, and often it was - but be prepared for at least one major gut punch that will make you reassess what kind of book this is. Answer: a better book than I expected. More powerful. Just be prepared, as I didn't expect to be fighting back sobs at 30,000 feet.

However, I'm withholding one star because I think there's a big missed opportunity here - and his name is Ed Nicholls. While the other characters are original and sharply drawn, the male lead in this story has all the distinctiveness of an L.L. Bean mannequin. He seems to have an interesting life story, but he doesn't seem interesting enough to be living it. I can't really even tell what he's supposed to be. Computer geek? Bigshot rich guy? Can't say I'm buying either one.

Okay, if you've read the book already, I can hear you from here. "He's both!" you're saying. "He's a geek who founded a tech startup, got rich, and hired a trainer and stylist so he could become cool and attract Italian fashion models."

Right, but here's the problem: "show, don't tell." The author explains what Ed is all about, but I never see it play out in his behavior. I don't sense the tension between the geek he is at heart and the semi-suave persona he's grown into. I don't sense much of anything. I can't really even picture what he looks like. Is he a delectable hunk barely disguised in Clark Kent glasses, or an okay-looking guy who grows on you as you pick up his endearing qualities? I honestly can't tell. He's... amorphous. With all the possibilities, it's too bad we got stuck with "generic male."

Well, I'm only harping on this because the book is otherwise so lovable and absorbing. I recommend it highly. Just don't waste a lot of energy figuring out Ed. There isn't much to figure out. But look almost anywhere else and you will find much to richly enjoy.
