Actor Jamie Lee Curtis and winsome illustrator Laura Cornell continue their successful collaboration (Today I Feel Silly, When I Was Little, et al.) with this paean to poise and self-assurance, I'm Gonna Like Me.

The duo sets out to "let off a little self-esteem" by following a seriously self-actualized (and gratifyingly quirky) boy and girl throughout their day on alternating pages. The kids take turns carrying the lines, often switching off midsentence, to describe exactly how and why "I'm gonna like me." (Girl: "I'm gonna like me / when I'm called on to stand. / I know all my letters / like the back of my hand." Boy: "I'm gonna like me / when my answer is wrong, / like thinking my ruler / was ten inches long.") The call and response continues through the action-packed day, as the kids get up, go to school, have lunch, go to a birthday party, etc., until they finally get tucked in--so no opportunity for building self-esteem gets overlooked.

Young readers will like Curtis's words and the rhythmic repetition, but it's Cornell's scribbling, reminiscent of the New Yorker's Roz Chast, that makes the book stand out. From an imagined fashion-show runway walk (love that snooty fashion press) to a hilarious lunch table spread (got to get some of that "Cup o' Lettuce" and "Pork by the Foot" for your Doris Day lunch box), Cornell fills the book with funny faces and lots of laughs (the best of which might be the girl's pet turtle working out in a cage with a treadmill, next to a book titled "Exercising Your Illegal Turtle"). The dynamic duo behind Today I Feel Silly returns for another lively, emotionally reassuring picture book. This time out, Curtis looks to the source of what makes children (of all ages) feel comfortable in their own skin. Cornell pictures the perky rhymes being delivered by a pair of young protagonists confident enough to shake off embarrassment and to feel proud (though not overly so) of personal achievements. "I'm gonna like me when I'm called on to stand. I know all my letters like the back of my hand," announces a girl dressed in plaid, flowers and a cape. "I'm gonna like me when my answer is wrong, like thinking my ruler was ten inches long," says the boy as both youngsters stand before the school blackboard. Ultimately, the author concludes "I'm gonna like me 'cause I'm loved and I know it,and liking myself is the best way to show it." Though the message is both catchy and effective in its delivery, it's Cornell's humorous, detailed, ink-and-watercolor illustrations that give this volume true pizzazz. She hits just the right note of fear-tinged bravura with the characters' vividly imagined antics. Their portraits, embellished with all manner of costumes and fun accessories (a fire-extinguisher-like toothpaste tube, an Esther Williams lunchbox, a "Dalmatian Kit" for polka-dotting pets), will delight the audience. Ages 4-8.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-In rhyming text, a boy and a girl describe how they will like themselves whether things are going right or wrong. She says, "I'm gonna like me/when I'm called on to stand./I know all my letters/like the back of my hand." He says, "I'm gonna like me/when my answer is wrong,/like thinking my ruler/was ten inches long." They're going to like themselves, too, when they try new things, work on their good behavior, play with baby brother, or help around the house. They're going to like themselves "from [his] giant big toe to the braids on [her] head." Cornell's bright artwork appears to be done in watercolor and ink. The heavily detailed pictures have hidden humor that will be much more entertaining to adults than to children, such as the titles of the books scattered around the children's room. This pleasant addition will combine well with Nancy Carlson's I Like Me! (Viking, 1988) or Peggy Rathmann's Ruby the Copycat (Scholastic, 1991) for storytimes.

Great for self esteem

I bought this for my son and he loves it. He was having a bit of a self esteem issue so we thought it would be a good idea to order some books to help. Very cute story, nicely done illustrations. This book is in our rotation of nighttime stories.

The perfect finish.....

I titled my review the perfect finish because it's highly likely that this will be the last word on the subject!! LTC Pool has gone the distance to provide the reader with as much information on Wehrmacht rations as is likely to be compiled unless a yet to be discovered trove of documentation surfaces anew.

In addition to expanding further on some of the various individual food products and groups covered in Vol. 1, he has provided the reader with a detailed comparison of the US and German ration procurement and troop level operational ration system. This is unparalleled and provides a unique view of an interesting subject for students of both allied and axis combat subsistance.

For this volume, The author draws on new information discovered in joint English/US studies of German industrial facilities and capabilities. These studies were conducted in detail immediatly prior to and closely after the end of the war on many facets of the German military-industrial complex and reveal some interesting details related to food production and packageing, nutritional studies, substitutes for food products becoming scarce due to allied bombings etc. Much of this information formed the basis of many of the foods we consume today and the parallels are facinating.

The pictures are large and clear and reveal labeling and packageing details. There are many period photos throughout depicting foods and food related products in context as well. The text is light, yet professional and its obvious that the author is genuinely trying to provide as much information as possible to the reader and not simply parade his knowledge of the subject.

As a former US Army Senior Food Service Sergeant, I highly recommend both Vol's 1 & 2 as a superb refrence source to any student of the era. The books are even the same size so they'd match on a library shelf!! This a unique opportunity to aquire a vast amount of information on an obscure subject which will become more valuable as time progresses and these books go out of print.

Nourishing for the mind

I found Rations of the German Wehrmacht in World War Two volume one a very informative book so when the author came out with Volume Two to fill in the gaps he couldn't do in his first book, I went to no expense to get a copy and I am well pleased with it.

Volume Two is not in anyway a repeat of the first but filled with new information. I in peticular liked chapter thirteen in which German and American Ration systems are compared though I am disapointed that though the author provided great information on C and K rations, he provides nothing for the reader on T-Rations (ten in one rations) or F-rations (five in one rations) which American soldiers also consumed when they could.

A great source of reference for re-enactors and scholars of world war two.

This book is fantastic! Jim really knows his stuff! WWII German rations has been an interest of mine for many years and I actually had the pleasure of exchanging information with Jim long before his books were published. I can't think of anyone else who could have done this book any better!

Bombay Art Deco Architecture - A Visual Journey 1930-1953 presents a treasury of Art Deco buildings comprising residential, commercial and public architecture created during the glamorous and optimistic era of the mid 1930s and 1940s. The architects, a small list of the first generation of modern Indian architects, were trained in western architectural traditions, if not actually in the West. These architects, influenced by the fashionable aesthetic current in Europe, were eager to imbue the city with a new modern style. That style shares its provenance with the Art Deco architecture of Miami Beach, termed Tropical Deco by Laura Cerwinske in her seminal 1981 book. Built in the same era, the Art Deco architecture of the two cities exhibits similar scale, geometry, tropical vocabulary, and love of romance. Author Navin Ramani lived in Bombay for 21 years, in an Art Deco apartment building called Court View formerly owned by his grandparents. Much of his childhood was spent exploring his Deco-rich neighborhood. It was not until Ramani moved to Miami in 1989 and encountered the Miami Beach Art Deco District that he recognized the great architectural legacy of his hometown. But while that great treasury of Miami Beach hotels and apartments has been internationally recognized, nationally protected, and well documented, the larger assembly of Art Deco buildings in Bombay has, until now, been taken for granted. Simply superb

For anyone in love with Mumbai or with Art Deco architecture, this book is an absolute must. Lovingly photographed and produced, you get to see everything from the Asiatic Library and the Cricket Club to the lovely cinemas Liberty, Eros, and Regal. A must for any armchair traveller and Mumbai lover, as well as required reading for architecture buffs.

Faded Eastern promise

Who would have thought that Bombay would have the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings outside of Miami Beach. There is a photo on pages 272-273 of Marine Drive, Bombay and you could be forgiven for thinking, at a quick glance, that this might be Ocean Drive, Miami. Navin Ramani reveals the background to this remarkable architectural heritage in the front of his book: the opening of the Suez Canal, a merchant class settling in Bombay, the city becomes the center of the Indian architectural profession and extensive land reclamation from 1929 all helped to create a unique Far Eastern Deco habitat.

The book's many photos show plenty of apartments and commercial buildings with their concrete curved lines, geometric floor patterns and streamlined appearance. It's unfortunate though that the photos also show plenty pipe-work and aircon units spoiling the external look of so many of them. It is the movie palaces that really show off the Deco style. The interiors of the five featured bubble over with streamline curves, recessed lighting and flamboyant marble floor patterns.

Ramani's book will surely be the definitive one about Bombay deco but I was rather disappointed with many of the author's photos. They lack a sharpness and the color is rather muted and dull. I became aware of this when I compared them with Arnold Schwartzman's clean, focused photos of Deco LAndmarks: Art Deco Gems of Los Angeles and in fact there is a good example of the photographic difference in Ramani's book on pages 256-257, on the left is a dull, flat photo of 63 Marine Drive, Bombay and the right a similar looking Hotel Victor in Miami but the photo is sharp, clean and colorful. Still, despite this Bombay Art Deco is certainly worth having if you love this exuberant architecture.

Bombay Art Deco

Myself and my wife have just bought an art deco apartment in Sydney's inner western suburbs where there was a proliferation of small (generally 4-8 residence) deco style blocks built through the 20's, 30's and early 40's. When we were searching out books to learn more about the style elsewhere in the world this book on Bombay Art Deco really stood out, partly because my wife is an early career South Asian historian (with a specialization on modern Delhi) and neither or us had any idea that there was this collection of buildings in Mumbai. Dehli has its own Art Deco architecture exemplified by buildings like the Imperial Hotel which is a mix of Art Deco luxory and imperial Raj projection of power. However the style in Bombay exemplified in this book looks like it's something different again; sub-tropical and closer to holly-bolly-wood glam in parts than imperial grandeur. We'll be traveling to Mumbai next October for the first time to see these buildings first hand and to take some photos - we reckon this book has given us some great ideas on where to go and what to look for.

An unflinching look at a deeply dark subject

The news cycle today is brutal: Shocking reports of monstrous beheadings, people burned alive in cages, entire African villages murdered by militarized thugs.

Well, prepare to have a tad more of your hope for humanity wrung out (if you have any left). This compelling Kindle Single, 13 Men, written by Sonia Faleiro, is a riveting, unflinching piece of long-form journalism looking at the dark and hope-sapping phenomena of gang rape in India.

Faleiro takes apart the complex case of a charming, hardworking, but perhaps headstrong young woman recently returned to live in her remote village in West Bengal, India. She dared to flout centuries old local tribal customs - but paid for it with an even greater corruption of those same traditional moral codes.

The topic is timely, to be sure, noting the recent controversial decision by the government of India to ban a BBC documentary about the gang rape of a New Delhi woman. Debate about this censorship is raging across the Internet and world media.

Gang rapes by roving packs of men has long been a huge problem in India, but the country seems determined to bring this deeply taboo subject out of the darkness into the light of greater public consciousness - a painful process as India's multifaceted, complex and ancient culture lurches into modern times.

Faleiro's 13 Men should serve as a significant contribution to the discussion. With the withering gaze of a journalist determined to get all the facts and capture the complexity of a single case, the author demonstrates how enormously difficult and vexing finding truth and justice can be.

What's involved is not just a clash of cultures, but economic injustice, greedy capitalists, corrupt and/or inept public officials, competing interpretations of laws and customs, illiteracy, alcohol abuse and just the plain-old lack of moral character by certain drifting, good-for-nothing men - and perhaps the women who enable them.

This is not a book, this is a MASTER PIECE

I just can't get enough of this book, I have already read this book twice and I can't wait to read it for the third time, every time I read this book, I find something new in it, I believe you could raise your IQ after you are done finishing this book. I honestly think I am much smarter and I am much more informed about the world, the cultures, the atheletics, and ect... This book cover from A to Z, is there anything that Mr. Ohebsion (the author) hasn't mentioned in his book. It talks about different countries, it talks about legends and religions and it keeps it short and sweet about each particular subject, so you will never get bored. I just can't wait to read the next publication of Mr. Ohebsion, I highly recommend this book to all the book lovers and all the lover of wisdom and knowledge.

The Most Important Book Ever Written

I cannot even begin to describe how much I enjoyed this book. This is beyond a doubt the greatest book ever. There is just so much excellent stuff in here. Reading this book is like an endlessly fascinating and mind-expanding journey. Whether you want to learn about Machiavellian strategy, Chinese philosophy, human rights, philisophical stories, wisdom of religions, sun tzu art of war strategy, etc, its all in here. I have already purcahsed 10 copies and given them out as gifts. This is the kind of book you should keep your nightstand and read several times a day. It really captures thousands of years of the world's wisdom. It was written by the entire world, and put in to masterful format by Rodney Ohebsion.

A First Course in Miracles

It's All Mind: The Simplified Philosophy of A Course in MiraclesAuthor Edwin Navarro's goal is to encourage individuals to challenge the ways in which they see and experience the world around them through his brief discussion of the essential elements of Helen Schucman's formidable 1,264-page "Course in Miracles." Schucman, an avowed atheist, claimed to have received the material for her Course by channeling instruction from Jesus. Navarro's familiarity with Schucman's three-part text is obvious as he deftly creates a well-balanced and cogent synopsis that is complete in itself while motivating readers to seek further dialogue with Schucman's work and the work of other writers in the genre. Were he to delve more deeply into his subject in a sequel, an intertextual investigation of like-minded authors, including Plato, the Taoists, Eckhart Tolle, for example, would likely be very well-received. This text is a morsel that will send an intelligent reader in search of a splendid repast.

not the whole story

As a long time fan of Marianne Williamson's writings & talks, and I was interested to see someone else's take on ACIM. I have also read ACIM and completed the lessons.

This is readable and very succinct - but it is a very short book. I don't think any book of this length could do complete justice to ACIM. Though I can't say I totally agree with some of his interpretation of ACIM's philosophies, I did find thought-provoking his discussion of what forgiveness really is.

I'm not convinced I would have gotten much out of this book if it were my first introduction to the philosophy, but I will probably refer back to it occasionally as a quick reminder of a few of the high points I've studied in more depth.

A book for all spiritual seekers

As explained in the Introduction, no matter how good the teachings are in ACIM, many people find the book difficult to read. Edwin Navarro has done the world a great favor by simplifying the philosophy in ACIM and put it in a little book. I particularly admire the author's insights and clear explanations on the differences between religious teachings and those in ACIM, such as God and forgiveness. I highly recommend this book to all spiritual seekers.
